METAL INJECTION MOLDING (MIM)
Leveraging 25-years experience in injection molding, JPI recently added metal injection molding (MIM) capabilities to its service offerings. MIM technology produces high quality finished metal components by molding metal alloy powder as if it were plastic. Components may be molded utilizing a wide variety of metal alloys, often faster and at significantly lower costs compared to traditional machining and investment casting methods. As the name implies, MIM is an injection molding process comprised of four main steps: 1. Feedstock Formulation Fine metal powders are mixed with polymeric binders. 2. Injection Molding Parts are molded producing "green state" parts. 3. Debinding 90% of the binder material is removed through one of three methods: catalytic, thermal or solvent debinding, resulting in a "brown state" part. 4. Sintering Debound parts are sintered for final densities between 96-99% of theoretical. JPI’s entry to MIM includes assisting in feedstock selection, designing and building the molds, together with molding to the green state. Debinding and sintering are presently subject to sourcing to one of several manufacturing partners. For more information regarding JPI’s MIM capabilities please contact Claude Bessette or Richard St.Onge. |
